Via Land Vapor began the way most honest obsessions do: with a bottle that didn't smell anything like its reviews promised. In 2021, our founder, Marguerite Solano, bought a niche oud fragrance online based on glowing descriptions of 'smoky leather and dark honey.' What arrived instead was a thin, synthetic blast that faded within an hour. That gap between marketing copy and real-world wear became the reason this site exists.
Marguerite had spent over a decade working in retail fragrance counters and later in product development for a small indie perfume house, which gave her a practical, nose-first understanding of how scents are built, how they age on skin, and how they're sold. She started Via Land Vapor as a place to document fragrances the way wearers actually experience them — not as abstract notes on a page, but as something that interacts with body chemistry, weather, clothing, and time.
Who We Are
Via Land Vapor is run by a small team of fragrance enthusiasts, each with a different olfactory background. Marguerite leads editorial direction and handles most designer and niche reviews. Her colleague Desmond Achebe, a former aromatherapist, focuses on natural and botanical perfumery. Rounding out the team is Priya Natarajan, who manages our testing database and writes about budget and drugstore finds that outperform their price tag. Together, we've tested and written about more than 1,400 fragrances.
None of us come from a marketing or advertising background, and that's intentional. We wanted a publication built by people who buy their own perfume, wear it to work and on dates and through humid summers, and are willing to say when something doesn't live up to the hype.
How We Review
Every fragrance featured on Via Land Vapor goes through the same process before it's written about:
- We buy almost everything ourselves. The vast majority of bottles and samples reviewed on this site are purchased at retail price using our own funds. When a brand sends us a sample for consideration, we disclose it clearly in the review.
- We wear it, not just smell it. Every scent is tested on skin across multiple wears — different seasons, different activity levels, different layering with clothing — because a fragrance that performs beautifully on a cool October evening can behave completely differently in July humidity.
- We track longevity and projection with a simple, consistent method. We note sillage and wear time at the 1-hour, 4-hour, and 8-hour marks, and we repeat testing at least twice before publishing a final verdict.
- We compare against similar scents. Before publishing, we place each fragrance against its closest market comparisons to judge whether it's genuinely distinct or simply a retread of something more affordable.
- We revisit old reviews. Formulations change. When we learn a fragrance has been reformulated, we retest it and update the original review with a dated note rather than quietly editing the score.
What Makes Us Trustworthy
We don't accept payment in exchange for positive coverage, and we never let affiliate relationships influence a rating. If a fragrance underperforms, we say so plainly, even if it's from a brand we've praised before. Our scoring system — covering scent development, longevity, projection, value, and uniqueness — is published openly so readers can see exactly how we arrive at a verdict.
We also believe transparency means admitting our own limits. Fragrance is deeply personal, and skin chemistry varies enormously from person to person. We try to describe scents in concrete, sensory language rather than vague superlatives, so you can judge for yourself whether a fragrance is likely to suit you, even if our experience with it differed from someone else's.
Why We Keep Doing This
Perfume is one of the few luxuries that's entirely invisible to everyone but the people near you — a quiet, personal signature. We started Via Land Vapor because we wanted a resource we ourselves wished existed: honest, detailed, unglamorous when necessary, and written by people who genuinely love the craft of scent. Whether you're hunting for a reliable everyday signature or chasing a rare niche discovery, we hope our reviews save you a few costly mistakes and point you toward a few unforgettable ones.
Thank you for reading, and for trusting us with a small, fragrant part of your decision-making. We don't take it lightly.
